In the IPL’s Eliminator era, finishing in the top four has been crucial for teams. Not only does it ensure a place in the playoffs, but it also allows two bites at the apple. The Tata Ipl Point Table reflects these closely contested races, with teams battling throughout the league stage to secure a strong position.
It has led to some thrilling races over the years, including Shane Warne’s Rajasthan Royals finishing first in the inaugural season of the league back in 2008. It was a record-breaking performance.

Points table
The Indian Premier League points table is one of the most closely followed aspects of the tournament. Teams, fans, and media all keep an eye on it to see who is leading the pack and who is struggling.
The points table is calculated based on several factors, including wins, losses, no results, and net run rate. Each team is awarded two points for a win, while a loss earns them zero. In the event of a tie, the teams’ net run rates are used to break the deadlock.
The top four teams at the end of the league phase qualify for the playoffs. A team can move up or down in the standings depending on the performance of its rivals and how well it performs in its home games. It is also possible for a team to qualify for the playoffs even though they are not in the top four of the points table.
Last season, Punjab Kings finished on top of the ipl points table with 19 points from 14 matches, winning nine and losing three. They were only pipped by Royal Challengers Bengaluru on net run rate, which highlights how fine the margins can be in the IPL.
However, topping the points table does not guarantee a trophy as only a few teams have managed to do so in the past. In addition, the finals are played as a single game which means that finishing first does not necessarily mean you will win the tournament.
Eliminator
The IPL points table is the definitive measure of team performance over the 70-match league phase. Each team earns 2 points for a win, 1 point for a tie or no result, and 0 points for a loss.
The top four teams by points qualify for the playoffs, and a team’s net run rate (NRR) serves as the tiebreaker. The top two teams go directly to the final, while the third and fourth-placed teams play a single-elimination Eliminator match. The winner of this match will play the loser of Qualifier 1.
RCB led the points table at the end of the league stage, with 19 points after 14 matches. They were followed by Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad, who both finished on 18 points. Delhi Capitals missed out on a top-4 finish, finishing sixth with 16 points.
The team that wins the most matches during the league phase will be the clear favorite to win the IPL title. However, there have been occasions where teams who finished second or third in the points table went on to win the trophy. This is due to the unique playoff system that features Qualifiers and Eliminators, which allow teams to play fewer high-pressure knockout matches and preserve player fitness.
Defending champions RCB are well on their way to a fifth straight IPL title, as they lead the Tata Ipl Point Table ahead of CSK by seven points. They are one of only three teams to have made the playoffs every season since IPL’s inception in 2011, and they have won the final twice. They will face Gujarat Titans in the first Qualifier, while Mumbai Indians await results from this weekend to find out who they will meet in the second qualifier.
