The 12th edition of the Indian Premier League is entering its final weekend of the league phase. According to the IPL 2019 Point Table, Mumbai Indians are at the top, followed by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Delhi Capitals.
Rohit Sharma led MI to a nail-biting win over SRH on Thursday and now they are in pole position to qualify for the playoffs. The team finishing in the top two earns entry into Qualifier 1, which will be played in Mumbai.
Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians have won four IPL titles since 2013, and it’s no surprise that they’ve also finished on top of the points table in each of those seasons. They have one of the best teams in the league, with players who are equally dangerous with bat or ball.
The team’s success can be traced back to the foresight of their owners, who saw the importance of properly constructing their squad. They built their side around a core of young Indian talent, with high quality domestic bowlers doing most of the spin bowling and overseas quicks handling the seam overs.
It’s an approach that has paid huge dividends – in their book Cricket 2.0, Tim Wigmore and Freddie Wilde point out that Mumbai’s ‘trade off-defying’ squad began to take shape in 2010, when they had the foresight to hire a network of scouts who were able to identify emerging Indian talent before other teams did.
As a result, Mumbai have been able to beat the system of trade offs in the auctions, picking up players such as Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah at affordable rates, whilst still having enough money left over to invest in more expensive foreign players. That allows them to create an overall attack that’s well balanced, with plenty of variation and quality batting as well as speedy bowling.
That balance has been key to their successes – in the last eight IPL seasons, they’ve won 62% of their games when chasing and 56% when batting first. It’s an impressive record, and it shows that Mumbai have the capacity to win the IPL in a variety of scenarios.
The IPL’s playoff system is designed to ensure that the team that finishes on top of the table has a good chance of winning the title. It’s been a successful formula since the introduction of the Eliminator era, with the team finishing first having made the final six times and the team in second place winning the title on nine occasions. It’s no coincidence that Mumbai Indians have been at the forefront of this trend – they’re without doubt the best team in the league, and are undoubtedly the side to beat.
Chennai Super Kings
The Chennai Super Kings, also known as CSK, are one of the most successful and loved franchises in Indian Premier League history. They were formed in 2008 when the IPL started and immediately became a strong team thanks to MS Dhoni’s leadership and Raina’s batting. They won their first IPL title in 2010. The defending champions have made the final of the IPL five times, and they are looking to win another trophy this season.
The defending champions will look to open the season with a victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore on 22 March. They will be without their captain MS Dhoni, but they have a strong lineup that can get them off to a good start.
The likes of Ayush Mhatre, Sanju Samson, and Ruturaj Gaikwad will all play important roles in the batting department. The bowling will be led by spinner Noor Ahmad and fast-bowlers Khaleel Ahmed, Prashant Veer, and Matt Henry.
In the past 18 years of the IPL, the team that finishes on top of the points table has won the championship six times. However, the teams that finish second or third have won the title nine times. The IPL introduced the playoff system in 2011, which has given fans a chance to see new teams fight it out for the title every year.
The IPL will conclude with a series of play-off matches, and the winning team will enter the final match. During this time, fans will have the opportunity to watch some of the best players in the world compete for the trophy. In the past, these plays-off matches have been very exciting and full of drama.
Royal Challengers Bangalore
Royal Challengers Bangalore, known as RCB, is one of the most followed and loved cricket teams in India. The team has a massive fan base not only in Bengaluru but also across the country and the world. They are renowned for their energetic atmosphere at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium and have produced many memorable performances over the years.
The club made a winning start to their IPL season with a six-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in their home ground on Saturday. RCB captain Virat Kohli led the way with an unbeaten 69 from 38 balls as they chased down a target of 202 with ease. Devdutt Padikkal and Rajat Patidar also chipped in with crucial runs to help RCB claim their first win of the season.
RCB’s batting struggled in the early stages but Kohli was in imperious form as he reached his second fifty of the season. He was well supported by Tim David, who struck a brilliant 70 off 25 balls, and the experienced duo of Padikkal (50, 29) and Patidar (unbeaten 58 off 21 balls).
Once the pair were removed, CSK’s innings began to unravel as wicketkeeper-batsman Sarfaraz Khan offered some resistance with a 25-ball 50. However, it was a case of too little too late as paceman Jacob Duffy returned to the attack and claimed two crucial wickets in quick succession to end the game.
With a solid top order featuring players like Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers and Glenn Maxwell, RCB are a force to be reckoned with. Their bowling, led by Yuzvendra Chahal and Prayush Shukla, is strong too. Moreover, they have two top-class spinners in Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav.
However, it is their lack of consistency that has been hurting them this season so far. They will hope to improve on this as they head into the final phase of the league stage. In addition to that, a win against KKR will give them a huge boost in their quest for a maiden IPL title.
Sunrisers Hyderabad
The IPL points table is updated in real-time after every match. It reflects the team’s standing, wins and losses, and net run rate (NRR). The ten teams compete for a spot in the playoffs. The battle for the fourth spot in the IPL 2019 Point Table is going to be a nail-biter. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are both looking strong and are competing for a place in the playoffs. While either team could secure a spot in the top four, Delhi Capitals (DD) may face a tougher challenge. SRH and KKR will aim to finish among the top four teams and strengthen their chances of reaching the final.
