ODIs

ODI cricket, also known as One Day Internationals (ODIs), is the second-most-popular form of international cricket played over one day and typically played between two teams at neutral venues with spectators present.

Typically held on weekends to make them more accessible to fans than Test matches or Twenty20s; they’re also less formal.

Pakistan made history during the 2024 ICC Champions Trophy when they became the first team ever to defeat Australia in its final. This marked Pakistan’s first ever win against Australia in an ODI match and extended their winning streak by seven matches.

Pakistan have won eight out of the nine men’s One Day International series played at home since January 2023 – losing only to New Zealand by 2-1 scoreline. Their winless run at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium stands as the longest unbeaten streak ever in this form of cricket.

Pakistan will celebrate their 1,000th men’s one-day international in their upcoming ODI against South Africa, an impressive milestone which showcases their strength under captain Sarfraz Ahmed and their tremendous success, including their 3-0 series win against Zimbabwe earlier this year.

South Africa currently sit second in ODI rankings, but have struggled away from home this year. They lost all five road ODIs played and were defeated in three matches against Sri Lanka earlier this month. Faisalabad will mark South Africa’s first host game since their World Cup quarterfinal defeat back in 2012.

Victoria teen sensation Ollie Peake will make his international debut during Australia’s tour of Pakistan, while fellow Victorian allrounder Liam Scott could also play an integral part.

Both players will play an essential part in Australia’s bowling attack; their opportunities may depend on how Australia selectors decide to utilize Cameron Green. He may join the squad for some or all ODI matches against Bangladesh before moving onto Pakistan later on for more ODI matches.

T20Is

Pakistan was among the best prepared sides heading into this World Cup, having played 34 T20 Internationals prior to it, more than any other major power. Their preparation included playing six weeks of Premiere League Cricket from April-May as well as hosting Bangladesh for an eight-match T20I series at home and touring England and Ireland where they won all three series games with ease.

Australia are currently the second-ranked T20 team worldwide, but still require work. Their batting has allowed them to win matches but not close games in the past; now, however, many one-off T20s have been lost; hence T20Is will provide an ideal opportunity to assess their approach to T20I cricket and strengthen batting depth.

Pakistan recovered after their initial loss against India by winning their next two matches and, most notably, featuring strong bowlers performances in both victories. Their current form allows them to remain competitive at the World Cup tournament.

Pakistan defeated South Africa by a slim margin in Game Three of their series. South Africa started strong but eventually fell back under pressure from Pakistani bowlers; their batting struggled against Mohammad Hafeez’s 42 run knock off before eventually beating them by 19 runs.

Pakistan won the final game of their series against Sri Lanka by a narrow margin, as bowling dominated proceedings. Pakistan bowled seven overs in their first innings and made 139/3 for victory against South Africa, who struggled to maintain their lead after regularly losing wickets;

Ryan Rickelton and Brevis Nel had provided some hope before off-spinner Sajid Khan took control with an off-cutting turn that removed Rickelton as well as cleaning up tail-enders such as Shaheen Afridi who used his pace, variations and reverse swing to achieve victory.

Tests

Pakistan is an accomplished cricketing nation which has experienced great success in Test matches. They first visited England for their inaugural tour in 1954 and drew 1-1 against them.

Following that tour, their strength increased considerably and soon enough they were ranked number one – although only for brief period; India soon took over that spot again.

Pakistan made their inaugural Asian Test Championship appearance in 2010 where they won all three matches, receiving an honorary Test mace in Lahore as a result; later that same year they also managed to beat New Zealand 2 match series that helped retain their ranking status further.

Pakistan’s tour to the United Arab Emirates in 2022 proved fruitful as they won both Test matches, earning a 3-0 series win. Their performance there was nothing short of outstanding and marked an important step forward for their national team; unfortunately however their subsequent four Test results were less successful and they slipped to fifth in rankings.

On 7 January in Lahore, Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat, leading them to score fifties from Imam-ul-Haq, Masood, Rizwan and Agha before Fazal Mahmood took 12 wickets with his bowling armies. Meanwhile, South Africa struggled at bat and were bowled out for 182. Pakistan secured an innings victory and took an early 1-0 advantage in the series.

The second Test took place on 13 January and started poorly for the Proteas, who lost opener David Miller to an early leg-slip. South African batsmen struggled on an uneven pitch, leading them to be dismissed for just 183.

Dewald Brevis provided some resistance with a run-a-ball 54 before ultimately succumbing to left-arm spinner Noman Ali’s left-arm spin, who created reverse swing with ease before cleanly dismissing Brevis in an impressive 10-wicket haul and sealed an emphatic 93 run win – their third consecutive Test win and major blow against South African cricketers.

South Africa was defeated in an exhilarating opener thanks to Salman Ali Agha’s unbeaten 62, but Matthew Breetzke’s side came storming back with an eight-wicket victory at Faisalabad – evening out the series at one-all going into Saturday’s third and final ODI matchup.

Tony de Zorzi and Retief Rickelton shared a 73-run partnership, sparking South Africa’s hopes of an unlikely comeback. However, left-arm pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi and spinner Noman Ali turned the game in Pakistan’s favour with disciplined bowling and timely wickets.

Their impressive spells dismantled the Proteas’ lower order on a deteriorating surface, allowing Pakistan to regain complete control and secure an early 1-0 lead in the Test series.

The Pakistan National Cricket Team Vs South Africa National Cricket Team Match Scorecard highlighted the match-changing performances of Afridi and Noman, showcasing how Pakistan’s bowlers dominated the decisive moments to seal a memorable victory.
