The IPL started in 2008 with eight teams. Over the years, a few of them have come and gone. The Deccan Chargers were terminated in 2012, and Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Pune Warriors India played one season each before pulling out.
Finishing in the top four of the Ipl Table is crucial, as it guarantees a spot in Qualifier 1 and an extra match. This has provided some great moments, including that infamous Mumbai Indians-Rajasthan Royals battle in 2014.

Points table
The IPL points table is the ultimate unbiased adjudicator, separating the best from the rest by a simple set of numbers. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t provide some thrills and spills along the way.
The most important race each season is the one for finishing in the top four, which guarantees entry into the playoffs and gives teams two bites at the apple if they don’t win their first match.
This has given rise to some legendary matches, like Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals fighting it out at the Wankhede Stadium in 2014 or Royal Challengers Bengaluru overturning Chennai Super Kings’ Net Run Rate deficit to clinch second place in 2024. It has also spawned a few nailbiting races, such as Delhi Capitals’ last-minute charge to qualify for the 2026 Eliminator.
Matches
The IPL is famous for its thrilling playoff races. Unlike most sports, where the final result is decided by an impartial judge, IPL teams battle it out on the pitch for the top spot. The winning team earns entry into the final, while the losers play in the Eliminator.
The system was introduced in 2011, and it has been in use ever since. In the Eliminator era, teams finishing first or second have won six of the twelve finals.
Match results
The race to the top of the points table has made for some thrilling contests in the past. The teams finishing first and second will compete in Qualifier 1, where the winner will head to the final, while the loser will get another chance in Qualifier 2. In the Eliminator era, the team that finishes top of the table has reached the final six times, while the team that finishes second has done so nine times.
This season, RCB are poised to finish on top of the table again after a dominant showing over the last three matches. But there is still plenty of drama ahead, with DC and KKR in the hunt for a top-four finish.
All eight original franchises have finished on the top of the table at least once, with Kolkata Knight Riders having waited the longest for their first victory, in 2024. Match result information will be available via email and online on the NMS Match System beginning at 12:00 p.m. ET on Match Results Day for each Phase of the match.
Match statistics
The Ipl Table is the ultimate unbiased adjudicator – it’s a pure set of numbers, calculated to separate teams on the basis of their quality. This has produced some thrills and spills in the playoff races, from Shane Warne’s Rajasthan Royals battling it out with Mumbai Indians to claim top spot in the first season of the tournament in 2008 to Rajasthan’s nemesis Royal Challengers Bengaluru overturning Chennai Super Kings’ net run rate deficit in 2024.
Since the advent of the eliminator era, the team that finishes first has made it to the final 12 out of 15 times and the team finishing second has gone to the final nine out of 15. It’s been a different story for teams finishing third or fourth.
