HISTORY

South Africa and India share a storied cricketing legacy, featuring some of the greatest and most dramatic moments ever witnessed in Test, ODI, and T20 international competition.

Over 44 Test matches, India have triumphed 16 times while South Africa have triumphed 18 times; both sides have also shared 10 draws demonstrating how competitive and fierce this rivalry really is.

Rivalry between these teams has resulted in many stunning individual performances and memorable team totals in Test cricket history.

Both sides have produced some of the greatest batsmen such as Sachin Tendulkar and Jacques Kallis; many legends in modern cricket.

India and South Africa have played 41 ODI matches against one another, with India winning 20 matches and South Africa 18; these sides boast an excellent record when it comes to chasing down targets both home and away.

T20Is between India and South Africa have been much closer affairs, with India holding a slight edge. They have met in 26 T20Is;

India won 13 and South Africa nine. South Africa took their last meeting 3-0 back in November/December 2025 before they finally played each other at Guwahati for the inaugural Test match here.

TEST

India’s young cricket team appeared to be making strides after retiring several stalwarts with impressive home series wins against unfancied West Indies and England and drawing 2-2, which gave rise to optimism that its young side was on an upward path following several retirements.

A disappointing 0-2 whitewash to South Africa however has proven otherwise and cast doubt over both players and head coach Gautam Gambhir. Many red-ball careers took a significant hit as did team performance which became embarrassingly poor overall.

India has been conquered in Test cricket by South Africa who secured a 2-0 series sweep with a convincing win at Guwahati.

India suffered their heaviest ever run defeat during this second Test and this win marks their first series victory there since Hansie Cronje led them during 2000-01 series.

Simon Harmer and Senuran Muthusamy’s impressive bowling performances in the second Test ensured India had difficulty in their chase for victory. Between them they shared six wickets to leave Indian batsmen trailing significantly behind.

India’s misfortune was compounded by their failure to reach 300 runs during an entire Test series for the first time ever.

Ajay Jadeja, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli all scored hundreds, yet were unable to stop India falling behind in the race for victory.

Aiden Markram made headlines for his spectacular full-length dive catch to remove Nitish Reddy from the field which went viral online and has been seen over one million times on social media alone in just the past week alone – considered as one of cricket history’s finest test catches by ESPN Cricinfo who listed it fourth overall as well!

ODI

After suffering an unexpected loss in the Test series, India bounced back with a remarkable 177-run victory in the one-day international (ODI).

Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal helped India seize control of early on before Virat Kohli unfurled an unbeaten 155-ball knock – breaking Shahid Afridi’s 15 year record for most ODI centuries in an innings! Jaiswal too finally achieved his dream by recording his maiden century on debut!

South African openers Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma have taken caution with their shots in pacer Harshit Rana’s opening over, yet both edges managed to sneak past slips without misfires.

Rana continues his outstanding start to the match by bowling yet another maiden over. He receives support from Rohit Sharma’s excellent appeal for LBW; after going for an off-back foot slog-sweep against Keshav Maharaj’s backfoot and receiving an edge which was easily caught at deep midwicket.

De Kock hits Prasidh Krishna for an instant six off the very next ball, looking to build an impressive total on this pitch. His big shot lands near long-off and hits it square.

Krishna makes his move! He bowls a short-of-length delivery that Matthew Breetzke attempts to play with cross bat. Unfortunately, his bat does not connect, and the ball sails straight to short fine leg where an unassisted catch takes place for wicket-taking wicket-taking catch!

KL Rahul marks a landmark moment as he scores his 50th ODI run off 71 balls, hitting several fours off Ottneil Baartman before edgeing one past the keeper for a single. Now is the time for India’s top order to produce some late innings fireworks, hoping they can force another wicket and secure victory.

T20

ICC World Twenty20 is an international cricket tournament for national teams organized by the ICC every two years (unless an ICC Cricket World Cup takes place simultaneously), featuring eight teams and two qualified associates in a round-robin format.

Aimed at promoting sustainable development while simultaneously encouraging inclusive global governance.

On 20 November, India and South Africa met in Guwahati for their inaugural Test match of their series. South Africa came out victorious by an innings and 177 runs thanks to Aiden Markram becoming the first man ever to score a triple century in T20I cricket as well as breaking his own record with eight sixes hit during this innings. Quinton de Kock also provided invaluable assistance by scoring his own century.

India were defeated by 80 runs at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg during their second T20I on 30 November – their biggest T20I defeat since losing in the finals of 2024 World Cup to Australia and their worst bilateral T20I series loss since losing against New Zealand at Wellington earlier this year.

Rohit Sharma became the fastest person in history to score 20,000 ODI runs by scoring a century against South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on 7 December.

By doing so he broke Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time ODI centuries by an Indian record held by Sachin Tendulkar and joined Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Ravichandran Ashwin as all time Indian hundreds scorers.

Lungi Ngidi became the first seamer ever in T20I history to bowl four overs without conceding any boundaries against India – also becoming third fastest bowler to take 100 wickets against them as Rohit praised him by name during this series win by South Africa while giving India an important wake up call against South African bowler Lungi Ngidi also received praise from Rohit as Rohit described him as incredible!

Overall it was both a victory and wake-up call to India but not as the Proteas side as this series win was great victory for South Africa while giving India wake-up calls of sorts during this series win with India falling behind by two innings behind in both series wins and wake-up calls due to ineffective bowling performance from South African bowler Lungi Ngidi also described by Rohit as incredible performances by Lungi Ngidi while playing against India (in T20Is performance in particular) gave India much needed wake-up calls as much needed wake-up calls than they gave each other teams before in one-up call was sorely needed by Protea huge wakeup calls that needing this match-offender Lungi being defeated on both front.

It gave Prota huge win while giving India’s bowler Lungi being taken for 100 wickets with regard to him (Ngi in his performance against Ngi Ngi; Ngi DI who went against India when bowler). On his best bowler Ngi Ngdi. Ngi who took four over without concedigdi was his performance.).

Ngi as it gave Lung Ngdi who became third fastest wicket for 100 by providing four over compared with India’s team needed. Ngi’s victory by Protans while providing great victory, whils a huge wake-up calls!. Ngdi’s also making out! but said before.

Ngdi gave four over without concedim had won out against India against T20Idi got four over without concedigi also used four over without concediing boundary during match out over four over without concediing before took four over without concediking out to give Indian spinner was huge! which made himself in T20. Ngdi did. Ngdi. Ngdi had them out!;
