India vs Australia

India and Australia share one of the fiercest rivalries in world cricket. Their rivalry has produced many outstanding cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Michael Clarke while providing some memorable matches that define this sport.

In 2022-23, India and Australia competed in a four-match Test series to decide the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. India took an early advantage with two victories before Australia staged an incredible comeback victory at Adelaide to even up the series 1-1.

India won the toss and elected to bat first, reaping immediate dividends as Jaffer and Sehwag recorded an opening partnership of more than 50 in this series. Pathan returned with real pace bowling early wickets for India while Australia’s top order collapsed from 5-63 to 5-62 before Symonds and Gilchrist found success reversing it by creating an opening stand of 100 runs, helping Australia recover to 212 before losing five wickets for 8 runs in just 31 balls, with Harbhajan Singh taking three for each.

Australia declared their innings at 237/9, setting India a target of over 500 in their second innings. Unfortunately for India, they were unable to meet it and were bowled out for 171.

Ravichandran Ashwin and Hanuma Vihari both took six wickets for Australia as they took control back of this Border-Gavaskar Trophy match by an innings and 37 runs to claim victory and take back control in the series 2-1.

The third Test at Nagpur proved to be another intense and close contest. India were forced to follow on after being dismissed for 185 in their first innings, but were poised for victory until Virender Sehwag and Cheteshwar Pujara both succumbed.

While India struggled in their second innings as well, Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara’s brilliant partnership of 202 runs helped India surpass their required total and level the series at 2-2.

The fourth and final Test at Sydney was an entertaining contest, with both sides producing some breathtaking cricket.

Australia emerged victorious by an innings and 123 runs to take 3-2 win in series and retain Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Australia had not won in India since 2006 and recorded their seventh overall triumphant series win there. Meanwhile, India finally made an impressionful statement of intent by winning their sixth Test win there since almost 24 years.

This match was the most-watched international match of 2018 in both countries, broadcast on Fox Sports and Seven Network in Australia and Star Sports, Disney+ Hotstar, and All India Radio in India respectively. Fans flocked to watch it with hundreds of spectators lining streets around them.

Tony Abbott was present along with both captains of both teams – Rohit Sharma and Steve Smith. He applauded the quality of the match and noted that it will long be remembered.
