Hockey
Hockey at the Olympics is an energetic field sport played between two teams of 11 players each on an artificial surface, where their goal is to score goals using flat sides of curved sticks to play ball into opposing goalposts and score. Olympic hockey requires both advanced technical proficiency and athleticism that creates an exhilarating spectator experience.
India will be among the main contenders at this year’s Olympic men’s hockey tournament, starting on 28 July. They hope to improve on their seventh-place finish at the 2022 Asian Games and claim their maiden Olympic gold. Star players in their ranks include captain Sardara Singh, goalkeeper Pritam Bhattacharya, forward Nirmal Singh and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy.
The men’s Olympic hockey tournament follows a round-robin format, with the top five teams from each pool qualifying for quarterfinals. Winners from quarterfinals will advance to semi-finals and then the best-of-three final – this year with four 20-minute periods.
Many may assume the rules of hockey at the Olympics differ significantly from those found in the National Hockey League, yet many similarities do exist between both versions of the sport. One major similarity between them both is having three 20-minute periods. Furthermore, Olympic hockey also utilizes an innovative scoring system whereby winning team receives two points for every goal scored within any 20-minute period.
Indian Women’s Hockey Team have had difficulty competing at Olympic tournaments; yet, they have shown great potential. Although they were defeated by Netherlands at London Olympics 2012 and fell short in Beijing 2022; nevertheless they remain optimistic and hope to make the podium this time around.
Their pool A competition includes Brazil, France and Australia (Australia’s match is scheduled to take place at Stade Pierre Maurice on 30 August); additional opponents include Canada and United States (Canadians/USians are excluded).

Wrestling
Wrestling is a highly popular sport in India, boasting more than two dozen styles. Wrestling requires both strength and skill – something the Olympic wrestling competitions emphasize with several disciplines such as freestyle and Greco-Roman competing separately for Olympic medals. Each discipline imposes different eligibility rules while offering specific techniques and tricks to help grapplers succeed in competitions.
Shiva Keshavan led India at the 2024 Winter Olympic, competing in three events and finishing 37th. Lakshya Sen and Mirabai Chanu also competed but missed medal opportunities; Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from her final and so failed to secure bronze.
Indian athletes at the 2024 Summer Olympics were met with some setbacks as well. Antim Panghal fell victim to Zeynep Yetgil in her opening round match, failing to reach repechage stage for women’s wrestling despite India having previously won gold medals in that field.
Athletics saw Praveen Chithravel and Abdulla Aboobacker fail to qualify for the men’s 800m final, while Annu Rani placed 15th in women’s javelin throw qualifying group B qualifying round.

Archery
Archery first made its Olympic debut at 1900 and 1904. Following nearly two decades away, archery returned at Munich 1972 in both men’s and women’s individual and team events, with both competing as individuals while teams consisted of the top three male and three female archers from each nation based on their ranking in a ranking round.
The tournament began with a qualifying round that lasted an entire week and concluded on Saturday, followed by elimination rounds for individual events.
Archers were ranked according to their scores during qualification; with those scoring highest advancing directly into semi-finals. All other athletes competed against each other in single elimination matches before being chosen as semi-finalists or moving on directly towards final.
Each elimination match consisted of four sets, with archers earning points depending on whether they won or lost a set; wins earned two points while draws earned only one; the archer who amassed the most points was declared victorious in their match and advanced to the next round.
Lakshya Sen, India’s top singles player, beat HS Prannoy 21-12 and 21-6 to advance into the quarter-finals and will face tough opposition against American Zach Gibbons who emerged victorious in his quarter-final matchup.
Shooter Swapnil Kusale also won bronze for India while wrestler Neeraj Chopra and boxer Aman Sehrawat also added to its medal haul. Additionally, badminton superstar PV Sindhu, judoka Mirabai Chanu and weightlifter Karnam Malleswari made up part of its contingent.

Table tennis
Table tennis is a fast-paced sport involving two or more opponents facing off over a small table with a net, the objective being to score points by hitting a lightweight ball past your opponent with a racket. This fast-paced competition demands fast reflexes, precision under pressure and anticipation that keeps spectators on the edge of their seats – it has been featured at Olympic events since its introduction as an Olympic sport at Seoul 1988 Olympics; originally developed during late 1800s as an indoor version of lawn tennis.
At the 2020 Games, table tennis will feature in both men’s and women’s singles events and mixed team competition. Nations may submit up to four table tennis players per event (two of each gender). Five medal events will take place at South Paris Arena 4 inside Paris Expo 14km south of Olympic Village.
China’s Ma Long will attempt to add another Olympic gold to his record-setting collection. Already having claimed three straight, Ma is one of only five athletes worldwide who has accomplished the ‘grand slam’ – Olympic Golds, World Championships and World Tour victories.
China is so successful at table tennis for more reasons than one; their national name doesn’t even resemble “ping pong”. Instead, with 1.5 billion people and an immense economy supporting sports bureaucracy programs that invest countless resources into finding and developing future medal winners as young as possible.
Canada may never have won an Olympic table tennis medal, but their women’s singles tournament entries have placed within the top four several times. Lily Zhang and Kanak Jha were some of the standout performers from Canada at Paris.

India At The Olympics Schedule And Results highlight just a small piece of that brilliance while serving as an inspirational demonstration that by striving towards perfection in seemingly mundane activities you can accomplish greatness.
