1. Headingley
Headingley has long been considered an icon of English cricket, witnessing some of its greatest moments and providing fans with an electrifying experience – from merchandise stalls and food zones to live entertainment and stadium views, Headingley provides something for all cricket enthusiasts.
Root performs a reverse-sweep off the back foot and is rewarded with a boundary, moving him closer to reaching 50 runs and Bumrah as his hosts appear well-placed to claim victory.
Bumrah comes back on and attempts to tempt Root with another short ball, but he manages to avoid it and looks for an easy swipe, but his attempt falls just short and brings an applaud from Gill.
Bumrah continues his frantic bowling, yet cannot find any consistency with his spinner-bowling action. England’s batsmen look comfortable as the chances for a draw become ever more likely.
India are still favoured to win at Headingley on the final day, yet England have made history if they do not. Should India fail, England will have completed one of the greatest white-ball performances ever witnessed by any team – not least given how poorly England performed at Edgbaston during their opening innings batting innings. England captain Brook has an enormous task ahead to turn things around and ensure his side don’t lose another series by altering their approach and moving away from power hitting alone.
2. Edgbaston
Edgbaston Cricket Ground, home of Warwickshire County Cricket Club, plays host to Test, One Day International and Twenty20 International matches regularly. Renowned as one of the most atmospheric grounds worldwide, its arena has become something of an England fortress – winning 17 matches there during that period – Brian Lara’s unbeaten 501 not out against Durham was recorded here and in 1973 it hosted its inaugural Women’s World Cup Final when England beat Australia.
The ground has seen several significant milestones in English cricket history at Lord’s, such as the first senior match under floodlights in 1997 and, most notably, England’s inaugural day/night Test against West Indies in 2017 when Jos Buttler hit his fastest ever one day international half century against them while leading England to a 221-5 win.
On day two, however, India’s bowlers found the wicket proving unforgiving against England. Duckett and Crawley, who shared in an opening stand of 188 runs that was the basis of England’s Headingley heist of 2022, and Root who struggled on a pitch which favoured his bat were among those to depart early and dealt a serious blow to their chances. But late surge with Ollie Pope and Harry Brook lifted England to 393 off 78 overs – their highest successful Test chase at Headingley since Australia reached their target seven balls before reaching it and drawing was decided upon.
3. Old Trafford
Old Trafford serves as the home ground of both Manchester United football club and Lancashire County Cricket Club, situated in an industrialized section of the city but boasting hotels and restaurants nearby.
Old Trafford Stadium’s pitch is ideal for batting, and teams typically win the toss here and bat first. With a capacity of over 60,000 and easy train and Metrolink access – Old Trafford station right near the ground as well as nearby stops such as Lancashire CCC, Pomona, and Exchange Quays all within short walking distance – teams often choose Old Trafford as their home ground when choosing where to bat first.
Those planning on attending an Old Trafford match should make sure to reserve their tickets early, as there are multiple hospitality options ranging from individual seating to executive boxes that vary in price depending on what match it is and for how long.
England made a determined effort on the final day at Emirates Old Trafford to keep India from taking victory, forcing a draw that will see this series move into its conclusion at The Oval next week. Shubman Gill (103 not out) and Ravindra Jadeja both hit half centuries but it was Stokes’ 1-33 that had the biggest impact.
The area around the ground has an industrial feel to it and offers limited nightlife; though a hotel owned by several former Manchester United players (Hotel Football Manchester) receives rave reviews. There are also a few pubs nearby; The Tollgate in particular can become very crowded on match days.
4. Rothesay
Rothesay Castle has been owned by the Stewart dynasty since 1371, when James IV and V purchased it and renovated as part of their extensive refurbishments projects. During that time period, James IV and V made extensive upgrades and repairs to improve its appearance further.
England were in danger of falling short at Wankhede Stadium when both Phil Salt and Harry Brook fell quickly to Jasprit Bumrah; however, Jacob Bethell made up for their losses with an outstanding innings that kept England competitive until the final over. Unfortunately for Bethell though, India secured victory and will advance to face New Zealand in the final.
Rothesay is delighted to be the long-term title partner of England and Wales Cricket Board, investing in test cricket’s future by backing and investing in test matches across England men’s and women’s home tests – including 2027 Ashes matches – County Championship, ODIs, T20s, first class cricket matches and List A games. Additionally, community cricket participation will also benefit from this partnership; find out more here!
5. Chelmsford
If the first four days were marked by dramatic ups and downs, then day five took them a step further. England faced with a daunting target of 374 to chase and an increase in dilution looked set for their fourth successive win in India; but instead Chris Woakes came out batted wearing an arm sling next to Gus Atkinson as England attempted to inch closer against an unbearable Indian support system.
Indian Cricket came back out fighting, taking England by a whisker when Siraj spun one past Smith’s inside-edge and Dhruv Jurel made an outstanding diving catch to give India their first victory against England since 1991 – fittingly ending an incredible series of drama.
England enjoyed an outstanding series performance against India from start to finish – from Headingley’s stunning run chase at Headingley through Gill’s magnificent innings at Edgbaston and Stokes’ herculean effort at Old Trafford – but injury bedevilled both teams throughout. Jofra Archer had to fly home early from Tests one and two, Eoin Morgan missed both one-day internationals due to broken fingers while Sam Curran missed all three due to knee problems he picked up earlier during tour ODIs two and IPL 3. England will now turn its attention towards white-ball cricket against South Africa then Australia this year while Woakes fitness remains uncertain while Mark Wood is yet unsure if available or not.
