1. Tests

India have yet to win a Champions Trophy final, yet they’ve never been beaten in four matches against New Zealand since 2017’s final against Pakistan and will aim for their maiden crown this time around in Dubai.

Meanwhile, New Zealand are determined to redeem themselves after falling short in 2017 and will try and become the first team ever to take two back-to-back titles at this tournament.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will both look to add another Test century, while Sam Billings and Mitchell Santner hope to make an impression with the ball once again. Both teams have been performing exceptionally well, and expect an exciting and high-scoring clash!

Virat Kohli overtook Kumar Sangakkara to become the second highest run scorer in international cricket history, while New Zealand star Tom Latham closed on 9000 Test runs earlier this year and became only sixth player ever to do so.

Both sides boast numerous all-rounders capable of high-scoring encounters that should provide plenty of entertainment value.

India will host Bangladesh and New Zealand during their 2024-25 home season, with Kanpur as one of their venues. New Zealand haven’t played at Kanpur since World Cup 2014 while Rohit Sharma will look to avenge their recent loss there.

Both squads remain unchanged from first two Tests but New Zealand’s Colin Ingram may miss due to a groin injury; Matt Henry and Mark Craig will serve as replacements.

2. ODIs

ODI (One Day International) cricket is one of the world’s most beloved forms, featuring two innings of fifty overs each and decided by which side scores more runs first. India and New Zealand have battled in over 100 ODIs; India winning 55 to New Zealand’s 46, but still trail in overall wins.

New Zealand boasts an excellent batting lineup led by captain Kane Williamson and other experienced players, and boast a formidable bowling attack anchored by Corey Anderson, Tim Southee, and Andre Adams – known for their ability to restrict opponents and limit scoring opportunities.

Virat Kohli has been India’s go-to ODI batsman in this series, and looks set to extend his good form with scores in each 50-over game. The batsman could overtake Kumar Sangakkara to become second highest run scorer ever in international cricket history.

Will Young and Daryl Mitchell are making quick work of scoring 100 runs off 52 balls for New Zealand. India needs Nitish Reddy to whack away with some big runs at the other end if it wants any chance at victory in this matchup.

NZ v IND 3rd ODI Live: Harshit Rana out! India now need wickets quickly as Harshit Rana mistimed a fuller delivery from Mohammed Siraj and found fielder at deep square leg, leaving India reeling with no hope to salvage this game.

Shubman Gill brings on bowler Arshdeep Singh to break up Zakary Foulkes’ partnership. KL Rahul caught him at short third man. A fuller delivery from Arshdeep Singh went wide of Glenn Phillips, giving the batter a thick outside edge which left him disappointed;

Gautam Gambhir approached to speak with him after. New Zealand have taken great strides forward and require quick wickets in order to maintain pressure against India.

3. T20Is

India beat New Zealand 4-1 in a January 2026 bilateral T20I series played on Indian soil. Ishan Kishan scored an incredible 43-ball century while captain Rohit Sharma and Vijay Shankar contributed key runs as hosts sealed their series victory.

Additionally, spinners Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav took six wickets combined between them to close out victory for India.

This T20 series between New Zealand and India marked their first meeting since New Zealand’s historic 3-0 ODI whitewash of India in late 2024, which rewrote history by becoming the first time any visiting team whitewashed India over an ODI series of three matches or more.

New Zealand also won this victory to top all-time standings against India – becoming the first side ever to do so with more than two matches played against them!

New Zealand, who boast the world’s top batting strength in this format, will look to carry their dominance into T20Is and claim their maiden World Cup victory. Their hopes will be buoyed by Jasprit Bumrah returning after missing two T20Is against South Africa with leg injuries.

New Zealand have won just two out of their past 13 T20Is against India and will hope to improve this record this time around. But India have an equally potent bowling attack, led by Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Kuldeep Yadav, and Varun Chakravarthy who all currently possess impressive form.

Both sides will be eager to find success following disappointing outings against South Africa in ODI series, with New Zealand facing immense pressure to deliver better performances after being dismissed for only 88 in Mumbai in 2016.

A tight contest should ensue between both teams, and New Zealand may face added pressure after being dismissed for such a lowly total as that in 2016.

4. ICC World Cup

New Zealand boasts an enviable record in the ICC World Cup, having won it three times – most recently 2025 edition. They boast eight wins to five defeats throughout competition history; appearing twice in semi-finals (winning both of them), twice reaching quarter-finals, and reaching the quarters four other times.

New Zealand was one of the most successful teams in history during the 1990s, led by Chris Cairns and Richard Hadlee – with Cairns setting an unparalleled test wicket record with 431 taken over his career, while Hadlee setting the most runs scored by any New Zealander at Edgbaston in 1995.

After an initial underwhelming performance in their tournament debut, New Zealand’s Black Caps rebounded well and ultimately reached the semi-finals for the first time ever – facing India whom they had defeated 5-0 during group stages play – for the first time ever in history.

The match was an intense contest between both teams, as each side battled hard for victory. In the end, however, Indian bowling proved victorious against New Zealand attack with Jasprit Bumrah and Axar Patel leading the charge while Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli combined scored an astounding total of 212 runs during India’s final innings.

This match marked an important moment in both sides’ histories as it marked both teams’ inaugural appearance in a T20 World Cup final, and India’s inaugural win of this competition in its shortest format.

Additionally, this was the first occasion where these two sides met in both Test and ODI World Cup finals as well as T20 World Cup in Dubai; although New Zealand were disappointed to lose in the end they can now look forward to an impressive future on T20 as they aim for another five consecutive Champions Trophy titles by 2026, all of which forms a key chapter in the India National Cricket Team Vs New Zealand National Cricket Team Timeline.
