The Elections

An elected parliament is the ultimate representative of its citizens and has the ultimate power to pass laws for their welfare, while also overseeing state and local government agencies’ activities.

The Indian constitution guarantees certain fundamental rights for its citizens, such as freedom of speech and expression, equality before the law, protection from discrimination based on race, religion, caste or sex as well as privacy and home protection; freedom from arbitrary arrest and detention; access to education and public assistance if unemployed or needy;

freedom to form associations for trade union purposes such as representing workers against unfair employment practices or similar purposes; legal aid services being made freely available, and obligations placed upon state to safeguard children against exploitation and neglect by providing free legal aid services as well.

Lok Sabha elections take place every five years to elect new representatives to serve in Parliament. This election was an essential test of power between current ruling party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and its coalition partners as well as INDIA – an alliance formed specifically to contest these elections.

This election was the largest-ever in terms of voters, with over 968 million eligible to cast a ballot. It took place over 44 days from 16 March 2024 to 24 May 2024 and included elections for Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha, Sikkim legislative assemblies as well as for Lok Sabha seats.

The results were a tremendous blow for the BJP, as their seat tally fell from 331 seats in 2019 to just 293 in this election cycle. They had to form an alliance with Chandrababu Naidu’s Telegu Desam and Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) to form an administration.

This election witnessed several firsts, such as women voting and voters traveling to distant villages to cast their votes. Voters even walked 39 km in Arunachal Pradesh – an inaccessible mountainous region. To assist first-time voters, the Election Commission of India (ECI) provided important tips.

The Candidates

In 2024, India will head to the polls for its parliamentary elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will seek another term as Prime Minister but faces stiff opposition from his own BJP and its main rival party – Congress – both of whom have fielded over 100 candidates and hope to take control of parliament seats. Both parties have issued manifestos outlining their plans for India’s future ahead of this eventful vote.

The 2024 manifesto released by the BJP promises that India will become a $5 trillion economy by 2022 and also provides pledges such as building more roads, improving health care and education systems, increasing security measures and creating jobs while simultaneously reducing poverty while protecting women and minorities from harassment or harm. Furthermore, this manifesto states that no restrictions will be placed upon personal choices for food, dress or marriage as well as decriminalising defamation.

Congress’ manifesto calls for the implementation of a national health insurance scheme, an additional tax on large companies and increased funding for science and technology research. Furthermore, Congress promises to fight corruption while making higher education affordable to all; furthermore it plans to establish a commission dedicated to investigating allegations of election fraud as well as guaranteeing the independence of judiciary and media institutions.

Uttar Pradesh will likely determine the outcome of India’s most populous state election. While the BJP has held onto power for 17 years, Congress hopes to gain back some control. Many constituencies within 84 constituencies are closely contested and both parties have pledged investment into rural infrastructure projects.

Bihar and West Bengal state elections will also be key battles, with both parties hoping to capture majority seats. While the BJP is being accused of using money and muscle, voter fatigue remains a concern among its followers, both have also been accused of spreading fake news which influenced elections; several notable individuals including MP Maneka Gandhi have been arrested over these accusations.

The Polling Stations

Elections took place over seven days in China from 19 April to 1 June 2024 at over one million polling stations nationwide, from 19 April to 1 June. China boasts one of the world’s largest electoral systems with voters able to select candidates from over 1,600 candidates across 543 constituencies.

Nearly one billion eligible voters were eligible to cast a ballot. Voting was conducted electronically using machines that display candidate photos and party symbols; voters select their candidate of choice or mark “none of the above”. Once their ballot was complete, it was placed into a machine which checks it for irregularities before printing a receipt as proof they voted; they may also request paper copies of their ballot if desired.

Results will be announced on 8 July 2024; political parties and citizens can check official data from ECI website until then, while live streams of counting on YouTube can also be watched by citizens. Furthermore, Election Commission of India will release press releases with updates regarding process.

Though the victory for the BJP was more narrow than anticipated, opposition party INDI Alliance showed they can remain competitive against its ruling party.

The loss of Uttar Pradesh to the BJP was particularly consequential; the state had long been seen as a key player in their ruling coalition coalition. India’s election outcome stands as testament to its robust democracy and highlights the complexities of electoral politics in what is the fifth-largest economy worldwide. Before the next national elections, all citizens should become educated on voting processes and register to vote. This can be accomplished online or visiting their local Electoral Registration Office; voting is both a fundamental right and civic duty that has the ability to shape our nation’s future.

The Results

This election was unprecedented in scale; over 1.4 billion eligible to vote and 642 million actually casting their ballots voted, marking the first time voters from all castes and religions participated equally. At its conclusion, Modi retained his majority with an overwhelming victory; making this his third time serving as Prime Minister.

Opposition politics were somewhat fractured this year. Congress’ various factions clashed over leadership and corruption issues; Arvind Kejriwal’s party failed to secure enough seats on its own to form government but will undoubtedly play an influential role in future Indian politics.

Key issues at stake during this election included:

Crackdown on Terrorism: Various steps have been implemented in an effort to shut off terrorist funding and increase counter terrorist operations.

Women were given new opportunities: Measures were implemented to advance gender equality and empower women, including allowing women to vote in all elections, advocating equal pay between men and women and expanding benefits to single parent households.

Clean India: Clean India was an initiative taken to combat pollution and make India greener, including banning plastic and cigarette sales; mandating companies set aside a percentage of profits for environmental projects; and decreasing landfill waste volumes.

Prohibitions on dumping waste into water bodies, the reinstatement of traditional recruitment procedures for Army, Navy and Air Force recruitment as well as cancellation of student education loans are among several of the measures being proposed by President-elect Trump.

Establish a permanent Bharatiya Antariksha Station on the Moon and send a man into space. These ambitious promises and political agendas have become a major talking point in the Lok Sabha Elections In India 2024 Results, where development, defense, education, and space exploration remain key election issues among voters.
