History

India-England cricket rivalry is one of the oldest and longest-standing in international cricket history, evolving from colonial times into fiercely competitive modern matches with iconic moments and evolving cricketing philosophies.

India achieved independence and the rivalry gradually changed to reflect more equal conditions. Led by Kapil Dev, India won their inaugural Test series against England in 1986 under Kapil Dev’s tutelage; that proved pivotal. Over the next decade iconic players like Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Kumble, Michael Atherton Graeme Swann, and Graham Gooch became fixture fixtures both for India and England.

Recent years have seen frequent ODI and T20 clashes between these teams, with each side winning several matches each. Perhaps most noteworthy in this period was India’s victory at the 2024 T20 World Cup semifinal due to a clinical performance by Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav; also notable were moments such as an amazing catch from Virender Sehwag and an outstanding bowling spell from Bhuvneshwar Kumar during this series.

Both teams have witnessed dramatic Test series battles. England defeated India 4-0 and rose to become number-one in rankings; then later played out a 2-2 series which featured Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow as key hosts players.

Rohit Sharma mistimed his attempt at hitting Sam Curran over the top and ended up chipping it straight into Harry Brook’s hands at midwicket, instead landing outside off-stump and into Harry Brook’s hands at mid-wicket. It would have been wiser for Rohit to play down the pitch closer to his stumps with both feet on the pitch at once.

Matches

Jos Buttler turned back the clock while Harry Brook showed glimpses of his brilliant future as England overwhelmed an under-par India to complete a series-clinching victory at Rose Bowl, Southampton. England won the toss and chose to bat first; though they lost four wickets early on they battled back with 5 wickets at tea for 471 runs on five wickets at tea!

The ball was quite soft but English seamers fought hard, taking wickets regularly in order to maintain their lead. Indian batsmen, in response, made an incredible comeback and dominated day 2 with some amazing innings – it marked the first time ever that an opposing side scored five centuries in one Test match!

Virat Kohli fell victim to a devastating delivery by Jofra Archer as he attempted to work the ball down towards leg slip. Archer then delivered another perfect delivery that left Rohit Sharma vulnerable on his back foot – prompting the skipper to walk back towards the pavilion after dismissing him for 85.

Rahul becomes the fastest batsman ever to score two hundreds, joining Sachin Tendulkar, Ravi Shastri and Dravid in this elite club. England, however, were not finished; they completed the game in just over three days to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in this series.

India suffered an unexpected defeat to Sri Lanka under new captain Shreyas Iyer and have yet to secure their first win under Iyer. A lack of trust among players was evident on the pitch and this loss saw India fall from fifth in ICC T20I Team Rankings down to sixth. Still with two matches remaining in this series they still have an opportunity to climb back up.

Result

Indian batsmen scored five centuries in a single Test match for the first time ever and India secured a win by an innings and 25 runs; breaking Birmingham’s longstanding jinx while becoming only Asian team to ever triumph at Edgbaston Stadium and taking an 1-1 lead in this five-Test series.

Harry Brook reaches his half-century from 19 balls bowled by Axar Patel – an exceptional innings from England all-rounder that propelled him up the wicket-taking list against India for all-rounders.
