Sri Lanka defeated New Zealand in an exciting yet low scoring match. Although New Zealand only managed 212 runs, Sri Lanka were easily able to catch up and meet them head on, Dilshan and Tharanga each making centuries as they led their team into the semi-finals.
Next came their match against India national cricket team; Sri Lanka prevailed by an overwhelming margin; scoring 271 runs thanks to Mahela Jayawardene’s unbeaten century – making this chase one of the highest run chases ever seen in ODI cricket! They went on to clinch the tournament 3-0 ODI series victory.
After defeating Australia in their series win, Sri Lanka decided to face South Africa at home and lost all nine matches including three tests and five ODIs – their worst record in home series ever as well as their first 5-0 ODI whitewash ever at home.
Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan with ease in their Super 4 match. They batted first and scored 173 runs before Pakistan made their innings.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma both hit fifties but couldn’t break through thanks to some brilliant bowling from Dilshan Mendis and Pathum Nissanka’s brilliant bowling, while Kusal Mendis and Shanaka managed a century partnership that helped Sri Lanka reach their target – this marked three consecutive Asian Cup matches where Sri Lanka successfully chased totals over 174 runs; ultimately Sri Lanka advanced 10 wickets before moving onto the final.
Bangladesh won the 4th Match
After much anticipation, Sri Lanka finally won their fourth match at Galle. Both teams struggled to find their groove but it was Sri Lanka’s spinners that stole the show. Although Sri Lanka has excelled with their bowling this tournament, their middle order struggles continue linger on and averages between positions 3-7 are some of the lowest among full member sides; Bangladesh will surely pose an interesting test as their batsmen will also need to show some determination against these challenges.
Galle is known to offer an easy pitch, giving both spinners an advantage to take numerous wickets. Nayeem Hasan was especially effective, turning and getting his delivery to bounce – his middle overs spell caused a collapse of Sri Lankan innings before ending with five wickets taken off just four overs! By contrast, Shoriful Islam proved inconsistent but managed three wickets during his four overs.
Charith Asalanka won the toss and elected to bowl first. Litton Das was pleased with this decision as he felt it utilized the wicket and favoured their chase team. Litton Das is confident with the team he has assembled and looks forward to three matches in Super Four stage.
Shanto and Mushfiqur batted well to put together a competitive total before Mushfiqur was run-out for 49. Unfortunately, rain began falling, prompting further delays to play out its course.
At the end of the day, Bangladesh never really found their feet after making a strong start against West Indies, failing to build on what had been an impressive start by Litton Das. His amazing batting performance continued and now only 19 runs separate him from becoming Bangladesh’s leading run scorer in T20Is.
On Wednesday, the second Test in Colombo begins, with hosts set to experience an emotional moment as Angelo Mathews makes his farewell appearance before retiring after playing 108 Tests and helping two World Cup-winning sides.
