When it comes to IPL teams, popularity can depend on many different elements; these include their performance on the pitch as well as how many followers they have on social media.
Many teams boast large fan followings, but one of the most beloved franchises is Chennai Super Kings. CSK is often regarded as the most fan base team in ipl all time, largely due to MS Dhoni’s leadership, consistent performances, and the deep emotional connection the team has built with its supporters over the years.

RCB
RCB is one of the most acclaimed Indian Premier League franchises for good reason. Over their long history, they have produced some of sport’s biggest stars like Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble and Chris Gayle; but despite all this star power they still haven’t managed to claim an IPL crown yet despite fan frustration leading them into memes that keep coming up. That is one of the reasons RCB stands out so strongly;
RCB’s greatest strength lies in their batsmen, led by Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. Both players possess devastating batsmanship that can decimate bowling attacks when on form. Unfortunately, however, their weaknesses include an inability to build momentum or provide consistent support to their top order; death bowling also remains a difficult proposition and their spinners struggle to take wickets regularly.
As a response to the stampede tragedy that claimed 11 fans at its IPL trophy celebrations in June, RCB unveiled their six-point plan ‘RCB Cares’ which promises safeguards for future fan safety; these include a fan safety audit framework and staff training programs as well as working closely with IPL and KSCA to strengthen crowd management protocols.
Harshal Chahal made an impactful debut for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), becoming its leading wicket-taker and earning an India call-up along the way. Chahal, 27, had previously struggled at Mumbai Indians but finally broke through when joining RCB in 2022, topping their IPL wickets table and earning himself an India call up in the process.
RCB had an inauspicious start to their season but managed to secure a top four finish thanks to individual performances that saw them secure top-four standing. Kohli provided much-needed momentum by scoring record runs during the tournament; unfortunately though their inability to find an ideal batting combination early cost them dearly and they eventually fell victim to Sunrisers Hyderabad who took 287 runs to win, thanks to Travis Head scoring 39 balls before Heinrich Klassen made 30 in 30 balls!
CSK
CSK stands out from other Indian Premier League teams by prioritizing fan satisfaction over profit maximization. Their brand identity and family atmosphere is designed to build powerful emotional connections between its name, logo, and anthem and its supporters – creating a team with an ever-expanding fan base as well as an internationally appealing identity that draws players and coaches from different nations.
One key reason is Virat Kohli, one of the world’s most beloved cricketers and one of RCB’s main draws – one of its global stars and an iconic cricketer himself. Other global stars in RCB include AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle and Faf du Plessis who draw crowds to stadiums; their presence alone elevates brand visibility for this team. Furthermore, they have adopted an effective social media strategy which sets them apart from others competing in IPL tournaments.
Relationships are of utmost importance in sports teams, particularly local franchises competing with established national brands. If a team doesn’t make efforts to build its brand, its appeal could wane quickly. A cricket player plays three roles for their club: they act as members; may play on select teams; and promote it as the primary spokesperson; if a player feels disrespected by his club he may switch teams or become disgruntled leading to frequent player transfers that won’t benefit either club nor fan base.
As a branding expert, I applaud Chennai Super Kings for their outstanding efforts in differentiating themselves from competitors and developing fan ownership among their supporters. No wonder CSK is India’s first unicorn sports enterprise (valued at over $2 billion by Brand Finance London).
Branding experts may criticize CSK as being too generic and bland, yet its name conveys a strong sense of identity and belonging among its fans – this can be seen through numerous videos uploaded onto YouTube by fans celebrating victories or defeats of CSK. Furthermore, its brand name resonates with India’s urban middle class.
MI
Mumbai Indians stand alone as IPL fan favorites with an impressive global fan base and dedicated supporters who never disappoint when their beloved team loses. Over IPL history, no team has been more consistent and won more titles than them – including winning six outright championships during 2017.
Over time, Indian Premier League (IPL) teams have become more and more acclaimed due to their on-field performances and brand values. Many teams also enjoy strong connections with their home city or state as cultural icons; furthermore, their players remain extremely popular amongst Indians.
Though many factors play a part in a team’s popularity, performance on the field remains of key significance. A team with an outstanding record will always attract more fans than one that has underachieved. IPL players are well known to have large social media followings which makes connecting and showing support easier for fans.
At first, Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals enjoyed the highest television viewer ratings (TVR) for IPL matches, propelled by iconic names such as Sourav Ganguly and Shah Rukh Khan for KR and Shane Warne and Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty for RR respectively. But as time progressed, other teams managed to surpass RR and KR in TVRs; among these are Delhi Daredevils and Kings XI Punjab who eventually eclipsed both of these teams’ TVRs by several points over time – in 2014 RR had lower TVRs than KR and KR.
RCB are the third most-followed IPL team worldwide, boasting millions of fans and followers across social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and X. As five-time champions they boast over 43 million cumulative followers between Instagram, Facebook and X, while Mumbai Indians trail closely behind with 39 million cumulative followers between Instagram, Facebook and X.
Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans joined IPL as two new franchises during 2022 season bringing its total number to ten teams. Over time there have been changes within IPL with teams being terminated or rebranded altogether.
SRH
The Indian Premier League is one of the world’s most beloved cricket tournaments, drawing fans from across India and around the globe every year to cheer for their favorite team. One such team in India that stands out is Sunrisers Hyderabad; due to its high-performance culture and aggressive playing style. Their popularity has skyrocketed due to a huge social media following as well as exciting cricket. Their purple-gold branding with their catchy slogan “Korbo, Lorbo, Jeetbo” has become iconic.
RCB are currently the third-most followed team in IPL 2025 despite not winning any titles since 2008. Their strong fan culture, never-say-die attitude and Virat Kohli’s star power has attracted millions of supporters, helping create an image appealing to young people that resonates with brand image as a whole. Furthermore, many famous celebrities including Shah Rukh Khan, AB de Villiers and Maxwell act as team ambassadors.
After a slow start in their inaugural season, Sunrisers Hyderabad won their inaugural IPL title in 2016. Since then they have qualified for playoffs in five consecutive seasons and enjoy strong presence across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Led by former Test captain Daniel Vettori and featuring some of the world’s premier cricketers such as Kane Williamson, Rashid Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Mustafizur Rahman among their ranks.
Delhi’s greatest strength is its talent, which has contributed to an ever-increasing global following and consistent brand image. Their explosive style of play keeps fans engaged while their young talent makes them entertaining to watch. Furthermore, Preity Zinta from Bollywood was an added plus! Despite not winning many trophies themselves, Delhi fans remain fiercely supportive despite not winning as many trophies themselves; their social media strategy which prioritizes player-focussed engagement led them to amass an incredible following on Twitter – reflecting their brand which stands for much more than just sport alone – much like India itself is more than just cricket for them; rather it is part of everyday life for them!
