Abhishek Sharma and Hardik Pandya’s explosive fifties in India’s do-or-die Super Eight game against Zimbabwe at Chennai gave India a 72-run win in the India National Cricket Team Vs Zimbabwe National Cricket Team clash.
Zimbabwe’s Brian Bennett made a brilliant unbeaten 97 from just 59 balls while Tilak Varma hit 44 off 16; unfortunately though a miscue at long-on led to their downfall.

IND vs ZIM
Zimbabwe will aim to avoid an embarrassing defeat in their final Super Eight stage match as they host India. A win would secure a semi-final spot while defeat would end any hopes for further progression in this tournament.
Defending champions India are hoping to close out their tournament with another victory against Zimbabwe, having met four times already this tournament and won three matches while Zimbabwe lost just once.
Zimbabwe’s batsmen have struggled to find any consistency thus far in this competition and injuries have decimated their top order, yet there remains hope that Blessing Muzarabani and Sikandar Raza can spark a comeback.
India’s batting has shown some promise so far in this tournament and their openers have been impressive. Abhishek Sharma has done especially well so far and scored 33 off 13 balls; Ishan Kishan has also shown promise by hitting 15 off nine balls.
Zimbabwe have brought in pace bowler Axar Patel as a means of relieving pressure off their middle order, and restrict India’s run scoring potential. Patel has proven economical thus far – conceding only eight runs in his first over.
Shivam Dube to Tashinga Musekiwa: the batsman attempts a pull but misses the ball altogether and Sanju Samson dives right and takes an impressive catch!
To have any chance at progressing, the hosts will look to wrap up the match within 10 overs if possible. Axar Patel conceded only eight runs in his opening over, which led him to claim Tadiwanashe Marumani after she tried playing a pull shot off Jasprit Bumrah but completely miscued it.
India are on their way to victory in their final over against Zimbabwe with the asking rate exceeding 25 – making this game an almost quarterfinal for India and they only need a few overs more to seal their place in the semifinals.
IND 256/4 in 20 Overs
India returned to life with a bang in a must-win Super Eight clash and kept their semifinal hopes alive by crushing Zimbabwe at home.
India posted their highest World Cup total 256 for four on an unpredictable pitch that offered early pace and swing; legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar applauded their resilience under pressure, saying these must-win games “reveal temperament”.
India’s middle order rediscovered their power on Chepauk after struggling to accelerate on slower surfaces earlier in the tournament. Ishan Kishan and Abhishek Sharma provided an unbroken 84 partnership for fourth wicket to set India up for an immense total, and Pandya and Tilak Varma unleashed their late assault to add another unbroken 88 partnership – culminating in 80 runs being scored off final five overs to achieve a dominant performance by India’s batsmen.
Abhishek Sharma appeared out of form before this match, having suffered three consecutive ducks in the tournament. But on the high-quality Chepauk surface he found his groove, smashing two sixes and one four in an innings of 55 from 26 balls.
Unfortunately his century was short-circuited when he skied a Myers delivery directly at Sikander Raza at short third man – unfortunately enough for Sikander Raza as well.
Myers has been conceding runs rapidly, so the hosts must secure more wickets quickly. Varun Chakarvarthy comes back into bowl his second over and is finding gaps to hit. When Ishan Kishan attempted to play one over third man’s head he was caught behind.
On a black soil pitch at MA Chidambaram Stadium, India have made an excellent start. Openers Ishan Kishan and Abhishek are moving ahead at an impressive run rate with ease while Irfan Pathan’s first over was impressive as he removed several Zimbabwe batsmen quickly from play.
IND 184/6 in 20 Overs
India gave their fans a treat as they produced the highest total in any T20 World Cup match by crushing Zimbabwe by 72 runs in Chennai.
Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma each hit half-centuries as India posted 256/4, leaving Zimbabwe reeling. Brian Bennett finished unbeaten on 97 to give hope but they were never in contention.
India were initially disjointed in their opening overs, losing momentum with Sikandar Raza falling to Arshdeep Singh for 24. But after this loss of momentum came batsmen who rose to the challenge by hitting sixes regularly to make life miserable for Zimbabwe.
Following the toss, the batting order was adjusted, with Ishan Kishan promoted to no.3 and Abhishek Sharma being added into the middle order. Both batsmen had difficulty scoring initially before eventually producing runs at regular intervals in each over.
Axar Patel scores 20 runs before Tadiwanashe Marumani goes down for 20 more.
Zimbabwe must score quickly to stay in this game and the pressure is building up on their top order, who have failed to perform. Blessing Muzarabani has already been dropped twice during this innings as his bowling has proved unreliable.
Axar Patel bowled a fuller length angling outside off and Tadiwanashe Marumani missed its pitch and hit out to its edge, where Ishan Kishan collected easily at cover for one wicket.
Zimbabwe lose their second wicket as Varun Chakaravarthy fools Dion Myers with an off-spinner from Varun Chakaravarthy that misleads him by spinning an outside off loopy googly that misjudges Myers and attempts to slog but miscalculates and it hits him into the stands instead. India are on track for victory as they reach 177/6 after 17 overs.
Axar Patel continues his impressive bowling, drawing yet another review against Brian Bennett after an loud caught behind appeal from Brian, but the umpire says NOT OUT. Both umpires have tried hard to ensure an equitable game while India will surely seek wickets as soon as they can.
IND 256-4 in 20 Overs
India’s batting was in sublime form on Sunday as they posted an extraordinary total of 256-4 against Zimbabwe in Super 8 Group 1 action at MA Chidambaram Stadium – their highest total in T20 World Cup history and second-highest ever! India were in total control and displayed superb team play throughout this match.
Brian Bennett made history, alongside Sikandar Raza. Both players displayed incredible grit and determination as they kept Zimbabwe from succumbing to pressure despite losing. While Bennett may not have succeeded in his goal, his innings will provide much-needed confidence within their dressing room.
India scored their first breakthrough when Axar Patel struck with an outside off delivery from Axar Patel that Tadiwanashe Marumani attempted to force through off side but got an edge that Ishan Kishan collected easily at cover.
Zimbabwe were stunned and struggling with keeping pace with run rate as India scored their wicket quickly.
Abhishek Sharma made an excellent comeback, scoring 50 runs off 30 balls from Shivam Dube. In that over, he hit three fours and a six; it was his best innings since returning to form following an illness-induced slump. Hardik Pandya played brilliantly with both bat and ball to help India score an impressive total.
Ryan Burl was another player who found it difficult to start, being dismissed for a duck by Arshdeep Singh. Indian bowlers have shown great effort, so if they wish to reach the semi-finals they must continue this work and not allow too many runs against them.
Their batsmen have shown promising form; all that’s required now for their teams to make it is working as one and sticking together as one unit.
