Chennai Super Kings were expelled from the IPL for two seasons in 2015 due to an extensive betting and spot-fixing scandal, rather than any alleged on-field misdeeds or playing missteps.
India’s Supreme Court appointed a panel that handed out appropriate sanctions, such as two-season bans for franchises and life bans for officials, as well as governance reform measures, answering the question Why Was Chennai Super Kings Banned For 2 Years.

The Lodha Committee’s verdict
The Lodha Committee ruling on Indian Premier League corruption was a landmark decision. It set forth both punishment and reform measures, opening up opportunities to redraw lines between owners, administrators and team operations.
Furthermore, its ruling established a clear precedent that the sport’s integrity must come first while upholding vicarious liability principles; furthermore it confirmed that franchise owners were accountable for any issues which affected tournament integrity that involved officials of their team or franchise.
The judgment against CSK related to betting by its officials and transmission of inside information. It stated that Gurunath Meiyappan of CSK and Raj Kundra of Rajasthan Royals brought disrepute upon both league, BCCI, cricket as a whole by engaging in activities which violated anti-corruption codes and IPL operational rules by engaging in illegal betting activities.
However, the tribunal did not find evidence of match fixing by either team; its ruling focused on the facts at stake while leaving room for long-term governance reforms.
Lodha Committee ruling that two franchises be suspended for two seasons with owners banned from any involvement with cricket during that time is clear evidence of its intent; however, penalizing an entire franchise for one individual would have been excessive and would not reflect well on them or the committee itself.
The decision reached was an appropriate balance of sanctions to restore credibility immediately and reforms to avoid similar scandals in future, while also including reforms designed to prevent similar scandals from recurring.
Unfortunately, however, many felt it fell short of providing a comprehensive clean up solution; additional recommendations by the committee may have sent stronger signals about cricket’s commitment to cleaning up its act and lessened any doubt about that commitment from outsiders. It would have sent stronger signals that cricket was serious about cleaning itself up.
The league’s response
Lodha Committee’s verdict has had far-reaching ramifications. India Cements and Jaipur IPL teams were suspended from participation, while their co-owners Gurunath Meiyappan and Raj Kundra have been banned for life from further involvement with any form of game related activity – forcing both to find new partners and relocate should they wish to return.
Initial assumptions indicated that both companies would seek to appeal the decision, however due to Lodha being former Chief Justice and Ashok Bhan and RV Raveendran being retired Supreme Court judges; their membership suggests otherwise and suggest the ruling will stand.
Srinivasan and Meiyappan’s involvement as team managers was at the core of the controversy surrounding IPL, as it violated IPL rules prohibiting team owners from betting or trying to fix games. Both men were successful in hiding their illegal activities from BCCI administration until it finally caught up with them.
There are multiple factors why neither company will likely succeed in successfully arguing their case before the court.
Given that multiple witnesses will need to testify at trial, challenging evidence on appeal becomes exceedingly difficult and courts tend to remain reluctant in overturning verdicts due to their far-reaching ramifications.
However, should either company decide to fight the case, they will likely encounter significant legal opposition from other stakeholders, leaving their future uncertain until a court rules upon an appropriate course of action.
Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals remain two of the most successful franchises in Indian Premier League history despite ongoing debate.
Both teams have won five titles each while appearing in ten finals – not to mention winning Champions League Twenty20 twice! In addition to boasting impressive track records, both have extremely loyal fan bases.
The franchise’s comeback
After being banned for two years, Chennai Super Kings have made their triumphant return to action and won several matches and titles during this run.
Their fanbase remains strong throughout India while they’ve attracted some of cricket’s biggest names to join them on their journey back.
Even during a scandalous period, Delhi Daredevils have not compromised on their style of play or commitment to their fans.
Indeed, their franchise remains as popular as ever due to an abundance of talent available to them and is therefore joint-most successful IPL franchise alongside Mumbai Indians.
The Super Kings have long been one of the most iconic teams in Indian cricket, winning five IPL titles and appearing in ten finals over time – as well as twice winning Champions League! Such success gives the team great credibility, contributing to its immense popularity.
This team boasts an enormous fan base, which can be seen by their attendance figures. Their home ground, M. A. Chidambaram Stadium is one of the most well-known stadiums in India and can hold up to 60,000 people; whenever the Super Kings play at home they always fill the entire stadium, creating an electric atmosphere.
The Super Kings have also attracted some of the world’s highest-profile sponsors, proving their widespread appeal. Recently, Etihad Airways and FedEx have become primary sponsors for them; these partnerships have helped the club remain one of the most beloved clubs in India.
Furthermore, their jersey is now decorated with camouflage imagery representing India’s Armed Forces to further distinguish themselves and show support for their nation.
The aftermath
CSK suffered an irreparable blow when the ban was handed down, yet its significance also marked an important turning point for cricket’s premier league, which had never faced such a severe integrity crisis before. Not dissolution but rather suspension to address both gravity and cultural reset needs was the choice made by an extraordinary panel.
The ban also set new expectations for how an IPL franchise should operate and which kind of people it should attract. It was a stark reminder that no matter how rich and prestigious its team may be, sports must still be played fairly; regardless of whether owners, players or staff adhered to its rules in good or bad manner.
Gurunath Meiyappan of CSK had illegally bet and shared inside information with bookies without authorisation from CSK management and players, in violation of anti-corruption framework and league code of conduct; but his actions do not constitute evidence of match fixing by them or its players.
After being banned, key CSK players including MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo decided to join Rising Pune Supergiants, Gujarat Lions or Hyderabad Sunrisers respectively; but their fans remained true and supported their team through thick and thin.
Soon thereafter, CSK returned to the IPL, with one of the most impressive comebacks ever witnessed in league history. Their fans welcomed back their return with open arms as their new face roster performed admirably during their initial season of return.
But the return of CSK wasn’t without setbacks. They endured their first ever playoff knockout in 2025 after just 10 matches due to poor powerplay performance and underperforming key players – both contributing factors in their decline.
Still, fans remained as loyal to their team as ever and turned out in huge numbers at every home game they could attend; hopefully CSK can rebuild and reinvent itself for another successful IPL run in the near future.
