Running Backs
Miami was able to generate big plays in both the run and pass games, yet still fell to Baltimore 28-6. Jaylen Waddle led Miami with 106 yards from scrimmage while De’Von Achane ran for another 116 on 20 touches – two career highs from each player for Miami.
The Dolphins began the game quickly as wide receiver Dwayne Eskridge returned a kickoff for 25 yards. Unfortunately, their next drive was cut short when Lamar Jackson threw an interception in the end zone to Baltimore safety Alohi Gilman.
Second half was much different as the Dolphins found themselves within striking distance of scoring, yet were unable to convert. A tripping penalty nullified tight end Charlie Kolar’s 37-yard reception and they continued their drive – though Achane failed on another fourth down conversion attempt and could not convert.
Tagovailoa continued his impressive offensive play as he connected with Achane for a 20-yard gain before finding wide receiver Malik Washington on an 11-play, 68-yard drive. Unfortunately, Kolar’s third down conversion proved costly as the Ravens gained one first down and continued moving the ball downfield.
Tagovailoa was able to find Achane on an 18-yard gain to put the Dolphins within field goal range on their next drive; however, Daelan Phillips sacked Tagovailoa on fourth down and one for an interception which gave Baltimore great field position, and Jackson found Achane for another 2-yard touchdown pass on that drive. Following Jackson’s interception however, their rushing attack did not perform as effectively and they only gained 90 yards during this half.
Wide Receivers
Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins played out an exciting contest that showcased both talent and strategy, providing us with a fascinating showcase. Looking back at key player performances gives us valuable insights into team trends while showing who contributed the most towards shaping its final result.
Lamar Jackson showed his dual-threat quarterback capabilities by excelling both running and passing, maximizing yardage per play and keeping defenses guessing. He connected with wide receivers Rashod Bateman and Mark Andrews on key third down plays to establish himself as both an effective deep threat while also showing his versatility as an efficient short yardage option.
Tyreek Hill was able to use his speed to penetrate Ravens’ secondary, gaining yards after contact and tying the score in the second quarter. Although playing with an injured ankle, Hill still made crucial plays that created opportunities for Dolphins offense.
After recovering a fumble by safety Alohi Gilman, Tagovailoa drove the Dolphins into scoring range before kicker Riley Patterson made a 43-yard field goal to give them an 8-7 advantage midway through the first quarter. Jackson responded with an 11-play, 68-yard drive that culminated in a 3-yard touchdown pass to tight end Charlie Kolar for Baltimore to take an 11-10 advantage halfway through.
Marlon Humphrey and Calais Campbell each made two key interceptions to keep the Dolphins off balance, and defensive tackle Jerome Baker and linebacker Jaelan Phillips played pivotal roles on defense providing excellent pass coverage and run defense respectively. Special teams played an equally pivotal role with timely field goals and successful extra points helping maintain an even scoring pace throughout.
Tight Ends
The Dolphins played much better than their score would indicate in this contest at Hard Rock Stadium, yet still left with another loss. Running back De’Von Achane led all Dolphins offensive players with 106 total yards while rookie safety Dante Trader Jr. and linebacker Tyrel Dodson provided essential protection throughout the night for an otherwise vulnerable defense.
First half action featured Baltimore Ravens tight ends Isaiah Likely (who caught a 20-yard touchdown on their opening drive) and Mark Andrews (2-yard score on fourth down), giving Baltimore a 14-0 advantage with less than three minutes left in the first quarter.
These scores marked the first time this season that Ravens tight end duo Andrews and Reed scored two or more touchdowns from tight end duo play. Andrews entered this game having only scored once this year and had only 28 receiving yards, so both touchdowns were big ones for him.
Jackson completed eight out of his first nine throws in the second half, throwing three touchdowns – including an eight-yarder to Rashod Bateman on fourth down in the final minute of the third quarter – which put away this game and marked Baltimore’s inaugural four-TD game without an interception all season long.
On their initial drive of the second half, rookie Tahj Washington fumbled near Ravens’ 4-yard line and Alohi Gilman recovered it for a touchdown. Thereafter, defense held firm. Jackson played his best game of the year by throwing for 204 yards with no turnovers while Malaki Starks’ career-best 89.8 PFF grade marked seven points higher than any previous best in 2019.
Linebackers
Miami’s defense struggled at times, but still made some crucial plays. Rookie safety Dante Trader Jr. led all tacklers with 12 stops; Tyrel Dodson recorded nine tackles and one sack; Benito Jones registered his first sack of the season; Jordyn Brooks contributed eight tackles.
On Thursday night, Baltimore’s offense managed to move the ball at times but also made several costly errors that prevented them from seizing opportunities and winning 28-6 against Miami Dolphins. Their record improved to 3-5 on the year.
Lamar Jackson made an impressive return, completing 18-of-22 passes for 204 yards and four touchdowns – two each going to TE Charlie Kolar, Rashod Bateman and Derrick Henry who added an impressive 119 rushing yards on 19 carries.
On the opening drive of the game, Miami fumbled deep within its own territory and the Ravens capitalized with a five-play drive that culminated with Mark Andrews catching a 2-yard touchdown reception.
Following some missed opportunities by Miami (fumble recovery leading to turnover on downs and Hail Mary attempt falling short of end zone), Jackson found Andrews again on fourth down for an increase of 14-3 at the end of the first quarter; from thereon out, this win became one of many for them as every point mattered; regular season games like this won’t come often enough for them so every point mattered most for them in this one game against them in terms of regular season competitions.
